From Brunel to Beeline:

The Story of Brentford's Forgotten Railway

As a volunteer, you can walk along the Brentford Beeline today and can be surrounded by wildflowers, birdsong and mature trees. It is hard to imagine that this peaceful green corridor was once alive with the clank of steam locomotives, dock workers and goods wagons shifting freight from across Britain.

For more than a century, this railway formed the final link in one of Victorian Britain's great transport networks, connecting the Great Western Railway at Southall with Brentford Dock on the River Thames. It was the last project under the direction of Isambard Kingdom Brunel; the line helped transform Brentford into an important interchange where goods could move seamlessly between railway wagons and river barges.

Although docks, along with their trains, disappeared in the 1960s, the railway embankment from the London Road, heading north to the Great West Road, left behind something remarkable. Nature gradually reclaimed the embankment, creating the wildlife corridor we see today. The Brentford Beeline continues this story, helping to preserve both the area's industrial heritage and its now rich biodiversity.

Before the corridor

Long before the arrival of the railway, Brentford had been an important settlement for centuries. Situated where the River Brent meets the River Thames, it occupied one of the most strategic locations in west London. Goods travelling to and from London had long passed through the town by river and, later, by canal following the opening of what became the Grand Union Canal in 1805.

By the early nineteenth century Britain's Industrial Revolution was gathering pace. Manufacturing was expanding rapidly, and ever greater quantities of coal, timber, grain and manufactured goods needed transporting quickly and efficiently. While canals had transformed trade during the eighteenth century, the arrival of the railways promised something even faster.

Brentford's unique geographical position had been noticed. And it was the closest point from the Great Western main line to the River Thames, making it the ideal location for a dock that could transfer freight between rail and river.

Brunel's Vision

The Brentford Branch formed part of the ambitious expansion of the Great Western Railway during the 1850s.

The Great Western and Brentford Railway Company started construction in March 1856 under the direction of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Chief Engineer of the Great Western Railway. Like the rest of Brunel's railway network, the line was originally built to his famous 7 ft ¼ in broad gauge, which he believed offered greater speed, stability and passenger comfort than the narrower gauge adopted elsewhere in Britain. When it opened, the branch consisted of a single broad-gauge track running approximately four miles from Southall to Brentford Dock. As Britain's railways gradually standardised, a mixed-gauge line was introduced in 1861 before the entire branch was converted to the national standard gauge of 4 ft 8½ inches in 1875.

One of the branch's greatest engineering achievements survives today at Windmill Lane, Southall. Known as Three Bridges, Brunel designed the railway to pass beneath both a road and the Grand Junction Canal, creating one of Britain's most unusual transport structures and one of the last major engineering works completed before his death in September 1859.

World, meet Brentford

The railway and Brentford Dock officially opened in July 1859 amid considerable celebration. Guests arrived by special train and paddle steamer to witness what many believed would transform the town's fortunes. Freight services began three days later, while a passenger service followed in May 1860.

The dock was designed specifically as a transfer point between the Great Western Railway and the River Thames. Freight arriving by rail could be loaded directly onto barges bound for London's docks and beyond, while imported goods arriving by water could continue their journey inland by train. During its operation, Brentford Dock handled freight such as coal, timber, steel, flour and even Morris motor cars!

Decline

Following the Second World War, Britain's transport network changed dramatically. Improvements in roads, the rapid growth of lorry transport and changes in freight handling to bulk containers gradually reduced the importance of the docks in Brentford.

Passenger services had already ceased in 1942, while freight traffic steadily declined throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, and in December 1964, Brentford Dock closed permanently. The branch line lost its purpose, and large sections of the dock were later redeveloped into the Brentford Dock Estate, while much of the former railway infrastructure disappeared.

Nature Takes Over

When the trains stopped, nature quietly moved in, and over the following decades, grasses colonised the ballast, shrubs spread across the embankment, and trees took root where locomotives had once passed. What had been engineered as a Victorian transport corridor gradually evolved into an unexpected haven for wildlife. Former railway embankments are particularly valuable for biodiversity because they create long, uninterrupted green corridors through urban areas, allowing birds, insects, mammals and wildflowers to flourish. Eventually, the Brentford Beeline will be open for all, and one can follow the same route once travelled by locomotives carrying the commerce of Victorian Britain. Until then, you too can venture up onto the embankment as a volunteer.
